What is matariki (social studies)

On Monday, Mr Langley came in to teach us about paragraph structures and what a good paragraph consist of. We were given an article about Matariki and were told to write a paragraph of the four main points on Matariki.

My Paragraph:
Matariki is the Maori New Year, This is celebrated on the last few days of May and can last up to three days. When matariki disappears in Autumn it signals the time to harvest and plant crops for the upcoming winter. Nowadays, Matariki is important as it brings people together to celebrate the Maori New Year.

science - earthquake proof house

What makes a house earthquake proof: Solid structure, concrete foundation, scafolding, make your house a pyramid shape.

Aim: To design and make a house that can survive an earthquake caused by Mr Heath:)

Equipment:m
- 4 pieces of paper
- 4 cotton buds
- 6 thin sticks
- 6 popsicle sticks
-  small + one large cork
- 2 foam cups
- scissors + tape

Results: We won the earthquake challange! :)
was it the tallest: No
did it look the best? Obviously
WAS IT EARTHQUAKE PROOF!!? Yes

What do architectures use to make super tall buildings safe? The depth. For example the depth of the pit that holds the substructure has to reach all the way to bedrock. If bedrock lies close to the surface // the soil on top of the bedrock is removed, and enough of the bedrock surface is removed to form a smooth platform and this is what they build on...

New Zealand / Aotearoa should fix its own problems before helping other countries.

I strongly agree with this statement. New Zealand / Aotearoa is a beautiful country surrounded by acres of bush and and rivers and is filled with natural resources as far as the eye can see, However not everything in New Zealand is picture perfect. Over the years New Zealand has evolved and formed amazing landscape / landmarks, Each and everyone of them have a great story to go with it.  But despite our breathtaking views and spectacular cuisine we have a lot of economical problems such as pollution, the extinction of native animals and plants not to mention global warming. Theses are all major issues that we as a country are facing and trying to prevent and improve.

New Zealand is home to 4,749,598 people, That’s 4,749,598 people that the government has to provide for and half of those people don’t even live in homes, they’re either homeless, had to move, But it doesn't stop there. Not only do we have high numbers in homeless people but we have endangered animals being poisoned in the forests of New Zealand

Recent studies show that a new pest control called 1080 has not only been killing pest and unwanted plants but it has been killing our native birds! The Green party have been against this new poison and have told the government that it would harm our native animals and possibly increase the number of endangered birds and they were right. The Green party wanted the government to get the message and stop using the poison so they gathered a team and found a number of dead birds of all different species and dumped them at the governments door.

So I must admit New Zealand is a beautiful country with many amazing features but we have many cracks that need filling and plenty of issues to sort out.

Volcanoes - science

How do volcanoes form?

They form because of the movement of tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are pieces of earths crust and uppermost mantle together referred to as the lithosphere. The plates are around 100 km, 62 mi thick and consist of two types of material, oceanic crust and continental crust. Divergent boundaries occur when two plates pull apart, letting the magma through the gap. Convegent boudaries occur when to plates come together, when the continential crust and the ocianic crust come together.

Mount Ngauruhoe

Mount Ngauruhoeis located in the central north island. Mount Ngauruhoe last erupted In 1977 and is still active to this day.

I caused no major damage to the are surrounding the volcanoe but it spat out lava for a few hours and eneded later on that day.

Image result for mount ngauruhoe eruptionImage result for mount ngauruhoe eruption Interestingly enough the most active volcanoe today is the Kīlauea in Hawaii, it is currently the world's most active volcano, followed by Etna in Italy and Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion.

Kīlauea in Hawaii cause major damage to both the people and the island of Fiji when it last erupted on january the 3rd 1983.

Particle Theroy of Matter - Convection

Aim - To observe convection in a liquid

Equipment - 200 ml beaker, water, tweezers, a crystal of potassium permanganate, a drinking staw, bunsen burner, heat mat, tripod and gauze mat.

Method -
1. set up a bunsen burner on a heat proof mat, Put the gauze at on the tripoad but leave it just to one side of the bunsen burner.
2. Fill a 200 ml beaker with 150 ml cold water.

3. place the beaker on top of the tripod and guaze and allow it ot settle for a few minutes.

4. carefull inster the drinking straw down one side of the beaker, ensuring the straw is toucing the bottom of the beaker. be careful as you do not want to disturb the water to much.

5. using tweezers, drop a crystal of potassium  permanganate down inside the straw. wait for the crustal to settle on the bottom of the beaker.

6. very gently, so you don't distirb the water, remove the straw.

7. light the bunsen and slide it under the tripod so that you are only heating the outside of the beaker where the crystal is, obseve.

Observation -  The crystal dissolved and made a thick purple cloud and dissolved more rappidly on the heated side of the beaker. the purple moved up the beakers side and then formed a big circle and made its way around the beaker.

explanation -  this is because of convection currents. Hot water wanting t omove to a cooler place

Persuasive writting reflection, English

What did i learn?
I learnt how to write a persuasive statment without dragging out the topic and using the same words more than once.

Why did we do it as a class?
To use everyones ideas and help create a SEXY paragraph that is both powerful and interesting.

What will i do better next time?
I will try to involve myself more in these activitys. I will aslo take what ive learnt and put it into my writting.

What questions do i still have?
Why do we have to use the
"SEXY" paragraphs.

The voyage to a new land

I grew up in a small house with my family, Our house had no running water, no insulation and the toilet was outside which we shared with our neigbours. Now dispite those inconveniences we grew up just fine and managed to get though our childhood without getting any infectious sicknesses like whooping cough and scarlet fever.

I hated living in my neighbourhood! It was dirty and all the houses had no insulation or proper roofing due to poor effort in bulding any of the houses, My family and I all shared one room due to mold and feces taking over the rest of the houses.

One day I went down to the shops and saw a flyer advertising an oppertunity to move to a far away place called "New Zealand", I didint really know what to think at first but I suddenly found myself running down the street towards my house with the flyer in my hand. The day the boat was departing was only a weeks away and still had no idea what I was going to do and if I wanted to go.

Time seemed to fly by each day i thought about moving but eventually I came to a decision, I was leaving this dreadful place and starting fresh in a new town. The day the boat arrived I was nervious i'd never ever been on a boat before and this time it was a one way ticket.

The first day on the boat was okay but the constant swaying of the boat made my stomache turn it's self inside out, Trying to keep clean on the boat was difficult because there was no fresh water but it was still better then home. Animals were killed on the boat for fresh meat and milk was also provided at dinner time and breakfast.

The boat journey was long and I started to miss home after a few weeks but we played cards and chess to pass time and sometimes we just looked at the fish in the ocean. We had finally arrived in New Zealand and it was beautiful! the grass was green and the trees were taller then any building that i'd ever seen in London.

A year had past and living in New Zealand was bliss. At first I missed my family but the feeling passed very quickley. I got a job as a farmer and moved into a small home in a clean area but one thing that was surley different was that i had an inside toilet which was great in some sense no more sharing with the neigbours. The day I moved to New Zealand was truley the happiest day of my life.

Art lino cut prints.

My print looks bright and has a lot of texture to the base of the lino cut. My picture's expressionis a straight face, it has bold eyes that pull you towards it and make you want to look at it for just that little bit longer. It has a lot of character in it but you have to look at the details of the picture to really understand where im coming from.

My image represents a woodcut of a man which was designed by kathe kollwitz.

The wood cut has an expression of a bored and grummpy looking man.

He isn't wearing any accessories.
The whole image takes up the printing pages space because its just a mans face but shows a lot of detail to the drawing.

My picture fills the whole lino peace that i was give to cut my picture.

The marks on my lino cut image have been added in by muself, around the eye theres alot of small cuts and rough edges and near the check bone are more neat and tidy cutting edges.

My lino cut picture is an open cropped image showing only the face and the side of his cheek.

Something that is not evident on my print is the cutting near in the eye you can't really see it but ive gone back and forth with different cutting directions and tried to add a bit more texture but its not as visible as i would have liked it to be.

There aren't many shaded areas on my lino print but there are soem darker areas then the rest of the print and thats the right side of the print theres a slight darkness to the edge of the print but overall there wasnt as much shadding as i would have liked to have in my image.

Here's an image of my final design finished.

Being an individual is more important than being popular.

I highly agree with this statement because when your popular everybody's looking at you
and trying to
be you in some sense but if you were and individual then you wouldn't have to worry about
making a
mistake and having everyone see it, being yourself is far more important because when you
trying to be
someone else you technically being fake and untrue to yourself and everybody else.

Almost everyone in this world judges you based on how you appear which in my opinion is low,
people
are made the way they were supposed to be no one is perfect it’s physically impossible for
anyone to be
perfect. You're always gonna have flaws it’s a part of life that everybody gets/has and goes
through it but
when you try to cover it up with makeup and a petty attitude that’s where most people go wrong.
I think
that being yourself is far more important and if your so called friends don’t agree then they aren’t
your
true friends.

“Popular” is just a name that people get given if their rich, well known or liked by everyone.
Most teen
movies always have a popular guy/girl that everyone likes and wants to hangout with but they
also have
a group of people that are themselves and they tend to win in life because they aren’t
pretending constantly
they’re just being themselves and having fun. 9 times outta 10 the unpopular people end up beating the
popular people or become liked by everyone else, but mostly the story ends with love,
triumph and a
happily ever after. So i 100% think that being yourself is far more important than being liked
by everyone
all that matters in life is enjoying the good times with the people you love and having fun.

School is the best place to make mistakes?

School is an ideal place to make mistakes because it gives you a chance to learn from them and provides an opportunity to start over and think about how you can avoid making the same mistake again.
Mistakes are an everyday thing and it’s best you make them while your young and in school because you can fix them and it won’t really matter but when your an adult it does because it could impact your daily life like you could lose your job or hurt someone, it can go either way.

There are people that are paid to help you with you mistake when your in school and they give you advice on how to avoid making them over and over again, whereas when you grow up you don’t have that person to help you out you have to try and figure out how your going to fix it and sometimes mistakes can’t always be fix some are permanent which is why i think it’s best to make them while your in school because it won’t have a huge impact on your life unless your mistake made in school is unfixable.

Wind Racers ( science )

My team members: olivia and myself and andrew

we need to make a wind racer that will beat out classmates

Equipment:
trolley
cardboard
tape
paper
string
 scissors

our idea is to use paper to make a narrow triangle sail that will allow our trolley to catch the wind more affectivley.

method:
1. screw the pole from the clamp stad into the chassis
2. tape the strips of carboard to the outter part of the paper sail for strength
3. create a name and design for your wind racer and draw it onto the sail
4. attach the sail to the pole and tape it well
5. race!!!!

Our wind racer went 8 meters in 10 seconds and came third in the race against our classmates. our trolley went 0.8 meters per seconds

social studies cave art

What am i learning? I  am learning to write a story using only symbols and pictures to create a story that represents a moment in past time.

How does the work show my learning? the work we are currently doing in social studies is cave art!  Thousands of years back people used cave art to tell story's and create timelines, so by us attempting to create our own story using cave art it gives us a better understanding because we've actually done our own little cave art drawing.

What am i wondering??? I wounder why people used cave art, who was the first person to even establish this way of story telling i wounder why they used this way of story telling.

How can i use this learning? I can use this learning to help me with my cave art drawings and by learning about cave art it has given me a better understanding on how people used
to create these stories using only a stick and some type of ink or whatever they used back then, and the things they must of seen to have this much detail in their drawings.

I wounder why people cry:
Crying is part of our human emotional package – love it or hate it. Of course women are definitely better at it than men with the number of cries per year estimated at 50 and 10 respectively. It begs the questions how does it all work and what triggers our waterworks when we are both sad and happy? Get your tissues at the ready it’s all about tears this week.
Crying can be scientifically defined as the shedding of your tears in response to an emotional state  very different from lacrimation which is the non-emotional shedding of tears.
With that said your plumbing apparatus that makes your tears is all the same. So before I dazzle you with the fact that we have more than one type of tear let us explore the science of tear production and how it links to the emotional center of your brain. To do this we are going to use the classic example, the break-up.
With the beginning of the end  of the relationship, the production of your tears can begin. It is all down to your lacrimal system
(think of it like your inbuilt Thames Water supply) that sits next to your eyeball. It is both a secretory system that produces your tears and an excretory system that drains them.

curiosity topics

Image result for why do we have different skin colorsI wounder why we have different skin colors? Human skin color ranges in variety from the darkest brown to the lightest white. An individual's skin pigmentation is the result of genetics being the product of both of the individual's biological parents genetic makeup. skin pigmentation in human beings evolved by a process of natural selection primarily to regulate the amount of ultraviolet radiation penetrating the skin and controlling its biochemical effects.

Why do we have different skin colors?

Image result for why do we have different skin colorsWhat may cause our skin colors to change? Hyper pigmentation in skin! this is caused by an increase in melanin the substance in the body that is responsible for color. Certain conditions such as pregnancy or Addison's disease (decreased function of the adrenal gland), may cause a greater production of melanin and hyper pigmentation.

I hope this has given you a better understanding on the topic i chose!!! Thank you and Your welcome

Hokey pokey science

You will need: 50g or quarter cup of sugar, half a table spoon of water, 1 table spoon of golden syrup, half a teaspoon of baking soda.

Method:
1. put all the ingredients except the baking soda into a saucepan and place on a low heat.
2 stir until all the sugar has dissolved, raise the heat slightly so that it bubbles, and stir continuously until you cannot feel any sugar at the bottom of the saucepan
3.  take off heat
4. add baking soda and stir
5. watch what happens - it should all froth up with bubbles in the pan
6. pour into you tinfoil sheet
7. allow to cool
observation: when we added the baking soda to the mixture it reacted with it and formed bubbles full of carbon dioxide.

1) What are we learning? About HART and how it improved the racial segregation in South Africa
2) Why are we learning it? Because it is an important part of New Zealand history, But also because it ties in to our previous tasks.
3) How did we learn it? by using initiative and googling information
4) What questions do I have? How did racism become such a big problem and why did it take so long to be sorted out.
