Hokey pokey science

You will need: 50g or quarter cup of sugar, half a table spoon of water, 1 table spoon of golden syrup, half a teaspoon of baking soda.

Method:
1. put all the ingredients except the baking soda into a saucepan and place on a low heat.
2 stir until all the sugar has dissolved, raise the heat slightly so that it bubbles, and stir continuously until you cannot feel any sugar at the bottom of the saucepan
3.  take off heat
4. add baking soda and stir
5. watch what happens - it should all froth up with bubbles in the pan
6. pour into you tinfoil sheet
7. allow to cool
observation: when we added the baking soda to the mixture it reacted with it and formed bubbles full of carbon dioxide.

1) What are we learning? About HART and how it improved the racial segregation in South Africa
2) Why are we learning it? Because it is an important part of New Zealand history, But also because it ties in to our previous tasks.
3) How did we learn it? by using initiative and googling information
4) What questions do I have? How did racism become such a big problem and why did it take so long to be sorted out.

Science metal carbonates and acids

Aim: to show that carbon dioxide gas is produced when metal carbonate reacts with acid.

Method:
1) light your Bunsen burner
2) Add a pea-sized amount of the metal  carbonate into on of the boiling tubes.
3) place this boiling into a test tube rack, ensure you have bung and delivery tube ready
4) Add 5 ml of acid into the boiling to and quickly the bung and delivery tube into the mouth of the boiling tube.
5) holding the other boiling tube with you tongs, capture the gas.
6) when you think the tube is full your lab partner should light a splint.
7) carefully remove the boiling tube from underneath the delivery tube, taking care to keep if facing upright
8) insert the burning splint into the mouth of the boiling tube

observation 1 :  The flame got extinguish due to the presents of the carbon dioxide
observation 2 : the solution turned from colorless to cloudy which means that  CO2 was present

Aim  to show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.
Equipment A test tube, a boiling tube, Bunsen burner, wooden splint, a bottle of acid, a piece of metal, safety glasses
Method: 1) light your Bunsen burner
2) add your sample of metal to the test tube, Add 2 ml of acid
3) carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.
4) hold the test tubes together for a few minuets, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas
5) when you think the tube is full, you partner should light a wooden splint
6) carefully but quickly tip the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.

Observation: We first put in the metal and acid the liquid got really hot in the test tube and  one well felt it was ready to have the splint put into it we lit it and put it in the test tube and it made a loud pop noise .

Outline how you could tell a chemical reaction was occurring in the test tube: when we out the splint in the test tube in made a loud pop noise.

Image result for flying housesThe floating house...
The world is going to end and the ground will soon be lava and the only way you will survive is by having a floating house! I think it would be pretty cool to live in a floating house cause you could see the world you surrounded by! but how would you get to the shops and how would you drive your car there would be no roads just red hot boiling lava. i mean that would be pretty inconvenient if you needed to go somewhere important like the doctors or... i don't no you get what i mean hopefully. I guess it would kinda be like your on house arrest and cant leave to go anywhere and that would be super boring!

Neutralisation Science

Neutralisation

Aim:                 To observe a neutralisation  reaction.

Equipment:        A test tube, test tube rack, 1 mol  L-1 Na2CO3 ( sodium                                  carbonate ), 1 mol L-1 HCI ( hydrochloric acid ), dropper or                              dropper bottle, universal indicator solution.

Method:            1) add approximately 1-2 of ml Na2CO3  and place the test                              tube into the test tube rack. Add 3-5 drops of universal                                    indicator solution. 2) using a dropper bottle, add HCI drop by                            drop. Be careful because adding even a small amount of extra                          acid can mean you'll miss the neutralisation point.

Observation:     we put universal indicator in a test tube mixed with Ammonium                          hydroxide and we started to get a purple and blue colour. once                          we added the sulfuric acid it began changing colour to a rosy                            red colour... we did the same in a different test tube and got                            an aqua blue.

c: Space exploration is a waste of time and money?

Image result for plastic bags in the ocean
I disagree with this topic because.... We could be using that money for the ecosystem and the environment to try and prevent pollution from happening all around the world. In New Zealand we use over 1.6 billion plastic bags per year and half of those plastic end up in our oceans and take over 1000 years to degrade..  Around the world, an estimated one million birds and 100,000 marine mammals die each year when they become trapped in plastic bags or eating them. To a sea turtle a plastic bag looks just like a jelly fish witch is one of their favorite foods. Most sea turtles wash up on beaches with plastic bags over their head in their stomach and have died of suffocation. So instead of exploring something that is never ending and unpredictable like space we could use the money to start cleaning the environment and getting rid of plastic bags.

Testing pH ( science )

3/05/2018
Aim: To test the pH of a range of household chemicals.

Equipment: A variety of household chemicals, spotting tile, red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, universal indicator solution, safety glasses.

Method: 1. Add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting tile. If a substance is solid or is powdered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing it.
2. test the chemicals with litmus papers.
3. test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.

Universal indicator :
the universal indicator shows us how strongly acidic or alkaline the solution is. universal indicator has many different colour changes, from red for strong acids to dark purple fro strong bases. in the middle neutral 7 pH is indicated by green.
litmus indicator:
Litmus indicator solution turns red in acidic solutions and blue in alkaline solutions. Litmus also comes in a paper form.  Blue litmus paper will turn red in an acid solution and remain blue when added to an alkaline solution. Litmus does not tell you how strong the solution is.
